TULLYNAVALL

Location

Tullynavall is a large townland of 846 statute acres and 37 perches about five miles north of Crossmaglen, beside the village of Cullyhanna. It is bounded on the north by Tullyvallen and Tullyvallen (Tipping) East, on the east by Dorsey, on the south by Lurgancullenboy and Cregganduff, on the west by Freeduff and on the northwest by Cullyhanna Big.

Name of townland

The name of the townland means sither "The soldier's hill" or "The hedged hill or the round hedged hill" depending on the authority consulted. There is no other townland of that name in Ireland.

Sources of Information

Information about the townland was extracted from the following sources -

  • Hearth Money Roll of the Fews 1664
  • Census of Creggan 1766
  • Tithe Applotment Books - Creggan Parish - 1828
  • Townland Valuation 1837
  • Griffiths Valuation 1864
  • Census of Ireland 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911, 1926, 1937, 1951
  • First Northern Ireland Revaluation 1935
  • Second Revaluation 1957

In the 1828 Tithe Applotment Books the total area of the townland is shown as 508 acres and 23 perches (Irish). The Half Yearly Rectorial Tithe was 21-13-101/2.

The 1837 Townland Valuation recorded only houses worth 5 or more a year. There was only one such house in the townland, that of Patt Donnelly.

The Third Revaluation (1975) did not identify property by townlands. Instead, it used the new Post Office system of road names and postcodes. It can therefore not be used to continue this series of household, land and property censuses. To get as close as possible to the present, the position in the townland at the date of the last recorded revision of the Second Revaluation is presented.

Griffiths Valuation records the name of the owner of the townland as Re. Alex H. Synge.

In Griffiths Valuation, of the 69 landholdings recorded, 49% were of less than 10 acres, 77% less than 15 acres and 90% less than 20 acres.

The distribution of land holdings by acreage in 1864 and 1935 is set out in the following table.

Census of Ireland 1901

The Census enumerated 154 persons in 62 households; a ratio of 2.5 people per family.

Native Irish Speakers

Of the 62 households enumerated in the Census, 14 contained at least one native Irish speaker - 15 in all. Since theirs was the last generation to have been born into a predominently Irish speaking environment, their names, occupations and ages are recorded here. All were born in Co. Armagh, with the exception of Patrick Gogarty, born in Co. Louth.

  • Mary Casey, shopkeeper, widow, 70
  • Peter McCoy, farm servant with Owen Carragher, 67
  • John Reel, farmer, 57
  • James Mackin, farmer, 55
  • Patrick McCreesh, farmer, 70
  • Patrick Rooney, farmer, 65
  • Thaddeus Branigan, farmer, 75
  • Bryan Grant, farmer, 61
  • Mary Keenan, farmer, widow, 60
  • Michael Keenan, farmer, 60
  • Peter Macken, farmer, 66
and his sister Mary Macken, cook and domestic servant, 55
  • Bridget Mackin, farmer's wife, 40
  • Rev. Patrick Gogarty, RC Priest, 40
* The average age of the Irish speakers was 60; oldest 75, youngest 40
* Of the group, nine could read and write, an six could neither read nor write

Population Decline

The following table sets out the number of houses and population enumerated in the townland in each of the 11 Censuses held between 1841 and 1951.

  1841 1851 1861 1871 1881 1891 1901 1911 1926 1937 1951
Houses 90 77 76 72 71 60 63 60 51 49 39
People 485 418 410 347 298 272 254 244 184 166 149
People per house 5.4 5.4 5.4 4.8 4.2 4.5 4.0 4.1 3.6 3.4 3.8

In the period of 110 years, the number of households dropped by 57% and the population by 62%. The initial fall of 14% between 1841 and 1851 - the famine years, was followed by a short period of stability into the 1860s before the start of a continuing decline up to the 1951 census.

Names of House and Land Holders

All the Valuations since Griffiths identified those with houses in the townland and those who while living elsewhere leased or owned land there. The Census of Ireland enumerated only households in the townland. The following table uses this approach.

Although the data is not strictly comparable since the information was gathered for different purposes and used varying criteria, it provides a comparison of the names listed in the townland at the different periods. While we can not discern the direct lines of descent it is clear that many are from the same families.
