CASTLEBLANEY STREET - CROSSMAGLEN

Census of Ireland 1901

Castleblaney Street as a place does not appear in the BI summary sheets of the Census. This is one of a number of anomolies described in the Crossmaglen main page. By a process of elimination I have selected the street named as 'North Street, Crossmaglen' in the Census returns as most likely to be the right one. If anyone knows differently I would be grateful for any correction.

The Census enumerated 78 persons in 10 households; a ratio of 7.8 people per household. The households occupied a total of 60 rooms, a ratio of 6 rooms per household and 1.3 people per room. Two of the households occupied 10 or more rooms; six occupied between 5 and 9 and two occupied less than 5.

Native Irish Speakers

Of the 10 households enumerated in the Census, four contained at a total of 16 native Irish speakers. Since theirs was the last generation to have been born into a predominently Irish speaking environment, their names, occupations and ages are recorded here. All were born in Co. Armagh, with the exception of Owen Tumelty and Luke Murtagh, born Co. Louth; Mary Murtagh and Thomas McGahan, born Co, Monaghan.

Unlike the scheme adopted in the townlands, the names are not listed alphabetically and the following table reproduces the order in which they appear in the records.
